Road Trip/Local Outing Ideas
Eastern Townships
Once the snow is firmly on the ground, questions can swirl as to road trip destinations for some weekend or even mid-week (if your lucky!) skiing/snowboarding.
A great spot to look into for your next trip maybe the Eastern Township region (about 1.5 hr east of Montreal, or 3.5 hrs from Ottawa). |
Pinhey's PointNestled along the Ottawa River, just west of Kanata (near Dunrobin) is Pinhey's Point historic site.
Pinhey's Point while close to the suburb of Kanata, offers a country setting with a host of activity options: taking in a picnic, family outing (playground & BBQing) or even skipping rocks along the shores of the Ottawa river. The historic buildings give a glimpse into local Ottawa history and make for a scenic drive. |
Big Sandy BayLocated at the foot of Wolfe Island (near Kingston, ON) lay Big Sandy Bay. An ideal weekend getaway and easily accessible by vehicle via the scenic fairy ride from downtown Kingston.
Big Sandy Bay is situated in a conservation area, lending to a true "nature experience". The views of Lake Ontario are spectacular and the 2 + KM wide bay offer countless possibilities. |
Inukshuks on the Ottawa RiverLocated along the Ottawa River parkway at the Remic Rapids park are the seasonal Inukshuk art creations.
Typically appearing once the spring water levels come down. The number of Inukshuks grow over the summer/fall months and make for a great outing along the Ottawa River either by car or bike ride. If choosing to bike, you can extend your outing as the Ottawa River pathway passes through Remic Rapids park traveling west to Kanata and east past downtown. |
Murphy's Point - Big Rideau
An approximate 90 minute drive from downtown Ottawa, Murphy's Point provincial park takes you south west of Ottawa through pristine rural Ontario countryside to its location along the shores of the Big Rideau (just south of Perth). The park offers numerous camping options including electric hook-up campsites. Once settled in, there are a variety of activity options to choose from. (The adjacent pictures are from the Point hiking trail with spectacular views of Big Rideau lake.) As the park is situated between a few bays, shelter is provided to make for calmer water conditions. This lends to ideal kayaking, canoe and SUP options for water adventure ideas. Additionally, the Silver Queen Mica Mine located at the park offers an adventure in itself through the old tunnels (guided tour). (Part of the Seven Wonders of Lanark County.) |
